Tips for Snorkeling in Kailua-Kona
There are many beautiful places to go snorkeling on the Kona Coast from the shore, but it’s important to keep these tips in mind.
Safety First
Always snorkel with a buddy and be aware of ocean conditions.
Respect Marine Life
Look but don’t touch. Avoid stepping on coral reefs. The law states that you must stay at least 10 feet away from turtles and 50 feet away from dolphins.
Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Protect the environment by using sunscreens that don’t harm coral reefs. The only sunscreen that is reef safe is mineral sunscreen. Be sure to check the ingredients. Some sunscreens say they are “reef safe” but the ingredients are not.
Stay Hydrated
Bring plenty of water, especially if you’re spending the whole day at the beach.
Check Weather Conditions
Always check the weather and ocean conditions before heading out to snorkel.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, these tips are going to help ensure you have a safe and fun day while snorkeling!
