The Big Island of Hawaii is a land of breathtaking contrasts—fiery volcanoes, lush rainforests, black sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters full of marine life. With so much to see and do, planning the perfect weeklong itinerary can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks down a week of adventures and relaxing, mostly based in the Kailua-Kona area. Get ready for a week of unforgettable experiences on this island paradise!

Day 1: Welcome to Paradise – Settle in and Explore Kona

After landing at Kona International Airport, take it easy on your first day to adjust to the island rhythm. Pick up your rental car (trust us, you’ll need one to explore the island properly) and head to your accommodation. Most visitors choose to stay in the Kona or Waikoloa areas, both offering excellent access to beaches and attractions.

For your first evening, stroll through downtown Kona’s charming waterfront area. Stop by Humpy’s Big Island Alehouse for some fresh catch and a cold brew, or try the locally famous Umekes Fish Market Bar & Grill for some of the best poke bowls you’ll ever taste.

Continue south to the Painted Church (St. Benedict’s Catholic Church), a historic site featuring beautiful Hawaiian-inspired religious artwork. Stop at nearby Two Step (Honaunau Bay) for some excellent shore snorkeling. Just an hour and a half from Kona, this vibrant east-side town is known for its lush tropical landscapes, rich Hawaiian culture, and laid-back charm. Wander through rainforests, marvel at stunning waterfalls, and experience the authentic local vibe that makes Hilo a must-visit destination.

Once in Hilo, be sure to visit Rainbow Falls before heading to the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden, a stunning 20-acre paradise featuring thousands of tropical plants.

Day 6: Sun, Sand & Stunning Valley Views

Start your morning at Hapuna Beach, consistently rated one of Hawaii’s best beaches. The white sand and crystal-clear waters make it perfect for swimming and bodyboarding.

In the afternoon, take a scenic drive to Pololu Valley Lookout, located on the northern tip of the island. If you’re up for it, hike down to the black sand beach at the valley floor. The steep but short hike (about 0.6 miles each way) rewards you with breathtaking views of lush cliffs and crashing waves.

On the way back to Kona, treat yourself to a special meal at Lava Lava Beach Club in Waikoloa, where you drink and dine with your toes in the sand.
